1) ITALJET Dragster 125
This is a special scooter on paper even before it gains its
own identity. The most radical looking thing on two small
wheels grew in capacity this year, the 50cc version being
joined by a 125 and a 180. As the new engines are from
Gilera (Runner) and much of the running gear is from the
excellent Formula. The unique trellis frame, aggressively
trick styling and hub-centre steering make it a poseur's
machine that also performs.
2) GILERA Runner 125
An increasingly common sight on inner city streets, where
its excellent pace and suspension make it a very useful
and enjoyable way to get about. If you have a full licence,
the 180cc version, which is almost identical except for a
much more powerful engine that'll take it to 75mph,
makes a capable A-roads commuter. The 125 still manages a
useful 60mph and handles just as well as its big brother.
3) VESPA ET4
A modern interpretation of the classic mod-mobile,
built by parent company Piaggio to celebrate the success
of the model. The result is extremely tidy, almost timeless
styling, along traditional 'snail-scooter' lines.
The engine is as impressively smooth as the bodywork,
and Piaggio provides a whole raft of extra equipment for
personalising the ET4. Both this and the 50cc ET2 are
strong sellers, but the lesser model, though considerably
cheaper, is trapped in town by its 30mph top speed.
The 125cc ET4 hits a more useful 55mph.
