(1)The Seattle Times
December 21, 2001, Friday Fourth Edition

GM began installing the lamps, known as DRLs, in 1995. The lights appear
as a low-intensity headlamp, used only during the daylight hours to
   improve a vehicle's visibility

Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo and BMW also install DRLs across their product
lines, said Robert Lange, GM executive director, structure and safety
   integration.

(2)The Toronto Star
   August 26, 2000, Saturday, Edition 1

General Motors Corp. says an independent study concludes that since the
automaker added daytime running lamps (DRLs) on its vehicles in 1995,
motorists have avoided 17,000 crashes, or more than a five per cent
   reduction in ...

... Since the 1997 model year, all GM vehicles sold in the United States,
or more than 20 million vehicles, have had DRLs. DLRs have been mandatory
on vehicles sold in Canada since 1989.

(3)Chicago Sun-Times
January 19, 1998, MONDAY, Late Sports Final Edition

... daytime running lights. That's because well-meaning drivers thought
you had accidentally left the headlights on.

But daytime running lights, or DRLs, which turn on when a car or light
truck is started to make it more visible to other drivers, no longer ...

... become fairly common since 1995, after the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration formulated a rule permitting DRLs in this country
in early 1993. Before then, each state had its own laws on light
   operation during the day. ...

(4)Los Angeles Times
   February 20, 2002 Wednesday

Ford and other car makers also have been working on pedestrian-sensing and
warning technologies aimed at helping to prevent vehicles from hitting
   pedestrians.

In December, General Motors petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration to require that all domestically manufactured vehicles be
equipped with daylight running lights (DRLs).

They are reduced-intensity lights on the front of vehicles that
automatically illuminate when the vehicle is started. They make the
vehicles easier to see by both other drivers and pedestrians, says GM
   spokesman Jay Cooney.
