Of note was that, despite the EU wide tobacco advertising ban that
came into force on August 1 last year, both the Camel and Fortuna backed
teams were - as at Valencia last season - still running in full tobacco
livery today, although Marlboro once again withdrew its brand name from
the factory Ducatis.
In mid-December, Spain controversially voted to keep tobacco advertising
at its MotoGP and F1 events in order to "protect its important motor sport
industry". However, in response to that ruling, the European Commission
claimed that there was no room for such an interpretation and that
"sponsorship of cross-border events by the tobacco industry is no longer
permitted."
Spain, it seems, still sees things differently.
