What's the Difference Between the Signet and Quantum Helmets?
(The story of Arai's two different shell shapes - LONG OVAL and ROUND OVAL - and their benefits to you in comfort and fit.)
All Arai helmets are built to the same standard. They all incorporate the same basic design and material in regard to construction and impact-energy
management.
However, the various Arai models begin to separate and distinguish themselves from each other in terms of the specific application or rider segment they are
geared to.
With our Signet and Quantum series specifically, both models share the same "clc" shell construction, the same ventilation package (chin vent, brow vents,
side exhaust channels, upper ventilation) and the same type of inner-liner EPS (Expanded polystyrene) and comfort/fit padding. Both models also feature
Arai's advanced "Super AdSisR" tool-less shield installation system, but utilize slightly different parts (shield and mounting hardware) due to their
slightly different shell shapes. Which brings us to the main difference between these two virtually-identical models: FIT.
Long ago, when Arai first entered the US market, the company took countless head measurements and found that most Americans have "long oval" head shapes -
very different from Asian heads. The Research and Development that followed resulted in models that specifically addressed the "American" Long Oval shape -
one that is longer front to back than it is from side to side. This LO / Long Oval has been Arai's standard North American interior shape for over 20 years,
and is referred to as Arai's "traditional" shape! Evolving over the years, from model to model, the Long Oval shape is currently found in both our Signet
Series and Renegade models.
Are You a Long Oval?
Well, if you've experienced "hot spots" or pressure on your forehead from other helmets, even after a short time, you most likely have a "Long Oval" head.
Arai's Signet Series or the Renegade will provide extra forehead room, while at the same time providing a snug side-to-side fit. (A proper fit not only
makes you more comfortable and able to enjoy longer rides, it also helps keep wind noise to a minimum.) Also, a helmet that creates forehead pressure may
result in the tendency to purchase a helmet that is too big in an attempt to alleviate the pressure. Not only does this too-large helmet let in more wind
noise, but may also result in increased impact energy being passed to your head during an impact, as your head will move further toward the inner liner of
the helmet and give you what is called a secondary impact. In a properly fitting helmet, your head is firm against the liner, and therefore secondary impact
is minimized.
The Round Oval
Even though we find that the majority of Americans fit the "Long Oval" shape best, there are those of you who have what we call a "Round Oval" (RO) head
shape - which is more evenly proportioned all the way around. Are you a Round Oval? If you find yourself needing a bit more side room for temples or cheeks,
our Quantum series - and RX-7RR racing series - will fit the bill. (The standard and racing faceshields for these two models are also interchangeable.)
As this "Round Oval" shape is similar to most other helmet brands on the market, but not quite as severe, and it fills the gap between "Long Oval" and just
plain ROUND, we refer to this shape as our "Transitional" fit. It allows people who may not dislike their current helmet - but who want to wear Arai for the
level of quality it offers - to move up to Arai.
A final note on the "Transitional" reference. We have found that once a new Arai wearer transitions into the Quantum, and becomes familiar and comfortable
with Arai, oftentimes their next helmet purchase is a Signet Series, as they find that indeed it does offer them an even more comfortable fit.
NOTE that not all riders fit strictly into the LO or RO shape. A percentage of you will find that your head measurements are such that you can fit
comfortably into any Arai model.
So, while you may not be able to determine your head shape by just looking in a mirror, you can often go by experience. Do you get hot spots on your
forehead? Do you find yourself adjusting the position of your helmet as you ride, trying to relieve pressure? Does your current helmet have excess space on
the sides? Is your current helmet noisy? If so, you need to look into an Arai helmet with a different shell shape.

How do I Properly Fit a Helmet?
NOTE: As specification and fit can change from year-to-year, month-to-month, and even production run to production run, it is recommended that you try on the
actual helmet you buy before you pay for it.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation website has excellent information on properly fitting a helmet. You can find it here.
In addition, here are a few tips that relate to Arai helmets:
If at all possible, try on both a Signet Series and Quantum Series helmet to determine which Arai shell shape feels better - Long Oval or Round Oval (see
FAQ #1). Go for the snuggest fit possible, without being painful, as break-in/settling will occur, and you want your helmet to remain snug after this
period. Wear the helmet for no less than 20 minutes (browse the shop) to make sure you feel comfortable before handing over your credit card. Also, don't be
lulled into a helmet that fits "perfect"! If it's not a little snug, it will become too loose after the break-in period, allowing it to become noisy and
uncomfortable.
Another thing: Arai helmets tend to taper in at the bottom more than most helmets (it helps make Arai helmets quieter and more snug). Much like a tall boot
or fitted gloves, it may be a bit more difficult to get it on at first. But once it is, the fit is ... well, like a glove! To properly put on an Arai, grab
a chinstrap in each hand and pull to the side, opening the bottom of the helmet up to give your ears a bit of extra clearance. And do the same when removing
the helmet. Simply pulling straight up or down is cruel and unusual punishment for your ears.
All Arai models have removable/replaceable cheek pads, available in various thicknesses, which allow you to customize the fit to your specific cheek/facial
structure. Do not allow the cheek fit to affect your helmet size choice! Purchase the helmet based on how it fits your head! Then, if necessary, change out
the cheek pads for a set that fit your personal needs. At this point it might be helpful in determining the best head fit if you ask the dealer to remove
the cheekpads altogether - you'll also get to see how it's done - so that you can feel the fit around the top of your head without being distracted by
cheekpad pressure.
Be sure you obtain the box your Arai helmet came in, with all the extras (carry sack, instruction booklet, decal set and bottle of silicone lubricant for
the faceshield gasket trim). Also, make sure you ask your dealer to go over any areas where you have a question (shield/cheek pad removal/installation,
cleaning care, etc.).
Finally, make sure you fill out your Arai Warranty card. Not only will it help us handle any problems you might encounter, but we also utilize this
information to track stolen helmets which are often sent to us for "repair" of the damage caused by the theft.
