PS3 shooting victim has no regrets
By Craig S. Semon TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
WEBSTER— A man who spent more than 36 hours waiting outside Wal-Mart to buy
a PlayStation 3 said he would do it again, despite taking a beating in the
face, a shotgun blast to the chest and spending eight days in the hospital.
Michael Penkala, 21, of Webster, was shot in his right chest and right arm,
just below the shoulder, shortly after 3 a.m. Nov. 17 at Wal-Mart on School
Street (Route 44), Putnam, Conn. He was first in a line of 13 people waiting
for the sought-after PlayStation 3 at the time he was shot. Wal-Mart had
imposed a limit of one per customer.
Mr. Penkala had also enlisted three friends, paying them $75 each, who were
second through fourth in line to buy the game console. He planned to sell the
PlayStations later at a profit.
Mr. Penkala said that at 3:14 a.m., two masked men showing guns came around
to the front of the building and approached several people in line.
“At that point, I knew what was going on — two kids with bandanas over
their faces with guns,” he said. “So I dialed 911 on my cellphone and
dropped it into my pocket.”
Before the two robbers confronted Mr. Penkala, they accosted two other
individuals and ordered them to empty their pockets.
“They approached two kids first, and they got 75 cents out of them, and I
was the third person they came to. And I wasn’t giving it up for anything,”
Mr. Penkala said. “So they hit me with the butt of the gun in the face,
kind of got me to the ground a little bit, continued to hit me and struggled
for my wallet. And I just held on to that pocket and wallet for dear life.”
Mr. Penkala had $2,600 in cash on him, $900 of which came from his
grandmother. He was determined not to give it to the robbers at any cost. The
first two individuals escaped unharmed, while Mr. Penkala was not as lucky.
“They emptied their pockets. They didn’t have much, but they listened to
them, I guess,” Mr. Penkala surmised. “They wanted me to hand over whatever
I had in my pockets and empty that out to the ground and into a bag. I wasn’
t going to have any part of that.”Prior to being shot, Mr. Penkala, whose
glasses were broken during the assault, suffered a black eye, a gash above
and underneath his left eye (which needed two stitches combined to close) and
impaired hearing in his left ear for several days. He was able to scare away
the robbers, but not before one fired a shotgun in his direction, Mr. Penkala
said.
“I started yelling at them, ‘…Get the hell out of here. I called 911!’
Mr. Penkala recalled. “And they both ran and, after a couple steps, one of
them turned around and fired a sawed-off shotgun at me and then just
continued to run off into the woods.”
Although the two assailants wore bandanas on their faces, Mr. Penkala said he
could see them from the eyes up, as well as hear their voices. He said his
assailants were a white male, age 15 or 16, and a Hispanic male, no more than
18 years old.
Mr. Penkala said it was the Hispanic male holding the shotgun who shot him
when the two assailants were fleeing the Wal-Mart and running for the woods.
Mr. Penkala was shot once in the chest. He estimates that the shooter was 10
feet away from him when he fired. He was told by emergency responders that if
the impact was a little bit to the left, a little bit down or a little bit
up, it could have been fatal.
“After I heard the noise and felt the pressure, I slapped my chest and I was
like, ‘Oh my God, these (expletives) actually shot me,’ ” Mr. Penkala
said. “And I collapsed, and I got back up, and we all ran to the front of
the door and knocked on the glass door to get the attention of third-shift
workers to let us in.”
Mr. Penkala described the sensation of being shot as feeling like a beanbag
being thrust hard against his chest. And while he was coughing up blood and
becoming lightheaded from his injuries, his only concern was not his
well-being, but buying those PlayStation 3s.
“When they let us in the lobby there at Wal-Mart, I was on the floor
coughing up blood and telling the workers to take the wallet out of my pocket
and give it to my friends so they could continue waiting in line and purchase
the PS3s,” Mr. Penkala said. “For some reason I wasn’t thinking about my
wound, I was all about those PlayStations.”
Mr. Penkala began waiting in line for the PlayStation 3 game system at 1 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 15, 42 hours before Wal-Mart was going to open its doors and
sell them to the public at 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, not because he’s a fan of
the popular game system but because he saw a business opportunity.
For several weeks he planned his strategy to purchase several PlayStation 3s
and then resell them on the auction and shopping Web site eBay. He said he
doesn’t really know much about the game system, nor is he a fan of it. He
saw the PS3s solely as a means to make a hefty profit on the secondary market.
Although the game unit retails in the $500-$600 range, Mr. Penkala hopes to
get $1,000-plus each for his trouble.
The gunshot wound measures 7-inches by 10-1/2 inches and 1-1/2 inches deep,
he said. He underwent surgery to start skin grafting Nov. 21. He said his
recovery should take two weeks for the skin grafting done on his right leg
and a minimum of four to six weeks for his gunshot wound. And Mr. Penkala
expects to completely heal, despite a nasty scar that will always remind him
of the harrowing ordeal.
“I can’t say that I regret it, because you don’t think in these
situations. You just act. You do what you’re gonna do, and you don’t really
think about it,” Mr. Penkala said. “I would recommend to people just to
give it. Is money really worth your life? Not really … Once again, in those
situations, you’re not thinking. You don’t think about it.”
Mr. Penkala spent eight days in the hospital and returned home the day after
Thanksgiving. On Saturday, he picked up the four PlayStation 3s being held
for him, with one being given to him free from the Wal-Mart chain.
Some of his friends have told Mr. Penkala that he should list the game units
on eBay as “the game he was shot for,” as well as consider autographing the
items. He nixed the idea, saying that would be “sick.”
